Samsung LPDDR5X DRAM features

If the LPDDR5 launched by Samsung back in 2018 was 8Gb in size, the newcomer is of 16 gigabits. And this 16Gb LPDDR5X DRAM will run at a max speed of up to 8.5Gbps, i.e, over 1.3 times faster than the predecessor, LPDDR5’s 6.4Gbps. What’s more, this allows for higher capacity 64GB memory packages that could be used beyond mobile devices. So, it’s faster, consumes less power, can be packaged in bigger modules, and also enables broader use cases. The South Korean giant aims to pitch this technology to global chipset makers and together bolster the development of high-speed data service applications like 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and the metaverse. Our LPDDR5X will broaden the use of high-performance, low-power memory beyond smartphones and bring new capabilities to AI-based edge applications like servers and even automobiles,” said SangJoon Hwang, Senior Vice President and Head of the DRAM Design Team at Samsung Electronics. We don’t have a timeline of when we could see these DRAM chips in our smartphones and such. However since the Galaxy S21 series uses LPDDR5, we might get to see LPDDR5X in the succeeding Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup.
